Green Building in Malaysia Boosted by Swanky Sustainable Housing

The rapid rise of green building in Malaysia is being exemplified by two large sustainable housing projects near Kuala Lumpur – Green Beverly Hills and Diamond City

Providing low-density housing and some commercial development, these projects-in-progress are a response to Malaysia’s generous green technology incentives and rising demand for sustainable housing.

Green Beverly Hills will be a luxurious 350-acre development involving low-density housing, several large condominium buildings, a five-star hotel and a shopping mall. Located in the Putra Nilai, the project will be quite central – 15 minutes from Kuala Lumpur International Airport and about 40 minutes outside of downtown KL. Complemented by 70 acres of forest, 4 acres of organic farm, 20 acres of natural lake and eight different themed herb gardens, Green Beverly Hills will be a literal example of green building in Malaysia. The project is slated for completion in eight to ten years and will use the latest sustainable building technologies, including a water management and recycling program – especially important considering the limited water supply in Malaysia.

Diamond City, although smaller, will be potentially more sustainable than Green Beverly Hills. This classy locale will be comprised of 415 luxury houses, bungalows and mansions. Every unit will be built according to Green Building Index (GBI) standards, the use of recycled construction materials and solar electricity will be encouraged, and the land area will include large green areas kept as close to their natural state as possible. Demand for green building in Malaysia is such that within the first week of launching, 70 percent of this sustainable housing was sold.

Green building is something of which Malaysia can be proud – these and other projects are setting a pace for greatly reduced emissions levels, increased community benefit, improved efficiency and expanded investment in sustainable development.
